Between June and August 1942 they also produced approximately 1,000,000 Liberator pistols made from stamped steel with smooth bore barrels. With machine gun barrels, cartridge cases and the M3 submachine gun all being produced. The Guide Lamp division had made headlamps for cars and motorcycles before the war but in 1942 began to tool for war work. The stamped parts were parkerized and held together by pins while the barrel and barrel link were the only parts not stamped. Instead the weapon’s only safety was a rotating rear sight which acted as a firing pin safety (or possibly as a hammer block - difficult to tell from the photographs). Like the Liberator the experimental 1911 is made from stamped steel parts with a simplified magazine release and no grip safety or slide stop. It was developed by GM’s Guide Lamp Division which had also designed the M1942 ‘Liberator’ single shot pistol and manufactured the more successful M3 'Grease Gun’. This unusual stamped Colt 1911 is part of the Springfield Armory’s collection.
